The Academic and Career Readiness Department at Alamance Community College announces Yholima Vargas-Pedroza as our new ESL Coordinator.
Please join me in welcoming Yholima Vargas-Pedroza to ACC as the ESL Coordinator in the Academic and Career Readiness Department. Yholima previously worked at Duke Health and before that she worked at El Centro Hispano in Durham. In these positions she used her social work and advocating skills and coordinated support services such as employment, housing, crisis intervention, legal assistance, counseling, education, and interpretation services. Yholima is bilingual in English and Spanish. She holds certifications as a Community Resilience Model trainer, Community Health Worker, and medical interpreter.
Yholima is very active in the community. Recently, she was the chair for the planning committee for Esperanza 2022 festival, is a board member at the Alamance County Arts Council, and is the founder of Huepa! Culture and Art Institute, which brings attention to traditional folk Latino dance and performing and visual arts. She is active at the City Gate Dream Center and teaches Zumba as well as provides interpretation when needed. She is a member of CPAT, the Community Police Advisory Team in Burlington. These are just some of the wonderful things Yholima has been involved in and is not even an exhaustive list.
Yholima holds a bachelor's degree from Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta. As mentioned above, Yholima is already very active in our community and is excited to join Alamance Community College and serve students who are learning English, studying for the citizenship exam, and transitioning to college or a career.
