Each year, funds are raised in the community and subsequently granted back out to nonprofits that are serving individuals and families living in Alamance County. A diverse team of community volunteers vet the applications and make funding recommendations to the United Way of Alamance County's Board of Directors. Priority will be given to evidence-based programs that demonstrate strong collaboration with local nonprofits. Proposals must actively respond to the unique needs of Alamance County residents, with a specific focus on supporting the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) population.

Our Decision Principles

  1. Equity is non-negotiable: We prioritize decisions that reduce disparities and remove systemic barriers, especially for communities historically excluded from opportunity.
  2. Lived experience leads: We center the voices of people directly impacted by poverty in planning, funding, and evaluation - not as advisors alone, but as partners in decision-making.
  3. Invest where impact is measurable and meaningful: We direct resources toward strategies that show clear potential to improve youth opportunity, financial security, health, and long-term resilience.
  4. Community solutions over institutional convenience: We support approaches that respond to real community needs, even when they require adapting traditional systems or practices.
  5. Collaboration multiplies impact: We prioritize partnerships that strengthen the ecosystem of support in Alamance County rather than isolated efforts.
  6. Prevention and resilience over crisis response alone: We balance urgent needs with long-term investments that reduce future harm and build stability for families.
  7. Stewardship with courage: We use donor and community resources responsibly while being willing to fund innovation and address root causes, not just symptoms.
