United Way Worldwide Statement on the Death of President George Herbert Walker Bush

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec 1, 2018 – United Way Worldwide today issued the following statement on the passing of President George Herbert Walker Bush:

With the loss of President George H.W. Bush, the world mourns not only a great statesman, but a change agent whose impact transcends politics.   Tributes in the coming days will focus on President Bush’s long political career and his impact on the U.S. and the world—as they should.

For United Way, however, President Bush’s legacy transcends politics and is defined by a deep commitment to public service and giving back to his community.

It was this commitment to service that led President Bush to create the Points of Light Foundation, which connects individuals to volunteer opportunities all over the world— people who, like him, aim to serve a higher purpose.

United Way knows that volunteering is vital to our mission, and turns commitment into action that drives meaningful change in our communities.

We honor President Bush for his leadership in promoting the spirit of public service and the good that comes from giving back.  Our global network shares his steadfast belief in the power of the individual to change the world.

Our thoughts are with the Bush family, who we hope will find comfort in a life well-lived and a legacy that will touch many lives for years to come.
