Community Council: Mayor & County Recognition Day for Service
To spotlight the impact of service and thank those who serve, mayors and county officials attended Community Council to celebrate the 5th annual Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service on April 4, 2017.
Tim Jeffers is the Director of the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) a division of the Corporation for National and Community Service’s Senior Corps, which is sponsored locally by Burlington Housing Authority, in partnership with local schools, faith-based, and nonprofit organizations. United Way of Alamance County coordinates Community Council, a monthly gathering for local nonprofit volunteers and professionals in social services, recreation, education, health agencies, government, business, representatives of civic and church organizations and selected members-at-large.
Community Council works to:
- Promote cooperation and community planning
- Serve as information center for the community
- Stimulate continuous and systematic study of community needs and resources
- Formulate principles, methods and standards for improvements
- Stimulate and/or initiate needed new services
- Develop public awareness of community problems and possible solutions
Community Council began in 1939, today a typical meeting includes approximately 100 people who discuss community needs and coordinate services.
