UW Surprises Winner with Car
BURLINGTON, N.C. (December 1st, 2016)- Diane Shipmon was in the middle of teaching in Alamance Community College’s ABLE program; something she has done for the past 8 years, when she was asked to come outside. She did not expect to see a crowd surprising her with the news that she has won one of the 6 new cars parked in front of the Dillingham Center of Alamance Community College.
Diane was selected by a committee of Alamance County residents to win one of the two cars that will be given away by United Way of Alamance County as part of the annual Great Alamance Auto Giveaway program.
Diane was nominated by Jennifer Mock, Academic and Career Readiness Coordinator for ACC. “Diane runs circles around anyone I have ever hired, at any age. She passionately teaches those at the lowest literacy levels. She is constantly helping her community as well as her own family. I have found her walking to work because she loaned her car to a family member who was struggling to get to work or kids to school. I have seen her give rides convenient or not to those who are in need.”
Diane also founded Steel Magnolias, a group for woman with addiction. “The women can always expect words of hope, encouragement and kindness from Diane to help them endure the struggles that they face whether it is poverty, incarceration, addiction, abusive relationships, prostitution, mental or physical illness,” wrote Bonnie Thiele, Steel Magnolias’ volunteer.
Diane has been invited to attend the giveaway ceremony during halftime of the Elon vs. UNC-Asheville basketball game on December 6th at 7:00 p.m. to select the winner of the 2nd auto rally car. For more information about attending the giveaway ceremony click here.
