The purpose of this classification is to set up and monitor classes designed to meet the needs of the general public, as well as for business and industry, in the literacy area, which includes Adult Basic Education (ABE), High School Equivalency Test (Hi-SET and GED). Work also includes some hiring, training, placing, and evaluating part-time instructors, and monitoring the budget that is required to sustain the classes and the instruction in order to earn budget FTE for Alamance Community College.

Example of Duties

The following duties are normal for this position.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

Secures locations to house classes; works with the community and industry/business to set up classes in their locations; ensures that all classes have adequate curriculum and study materials; audits classes to monitor attendance and instruction.

Reviews all instructor applications and determines if they are eligible; sets up and leads orientation sessions for potential new hires; interviews, hires, and trains part-time instructors to teach classes; monitors and evaluates instruction and student progress; verifies time sheets, attendance, sign-in sheets, etc.; secures substitutes for instructors; evaluates the effectiveness of instructors and support staff; conducts student evaluations of instructor performance.

Monitors GED and HSE budget to ensure operations are within budget.

Oversees the work of assigned instructors and volunteers; meets with instructors and staff for problem solving and brainstorming; reviews and signs time sheets, travel, payroll, and attendance records; serves as mediator to help resolve any and all personnel conflicts in this section.

Serves on assigned College committees, serves on regional and state committees for literacy.

Makes program presentations to agencies, industries, churches, etc. to create partnerships within the community.

Ensures that certain state literacy reports are completed and submitted on time; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, or other documents.

Recommends equipment, text book and supply purchases.

Recommends and oversees new class starts; determines number of instructors that are needed in each class supports retention and transition efforts.

Reviews progress test/post test results on ABE/Hi-Set or ESL classes and students.

Leads literacy professional development and best practices sessions on local, regional, and state level.

Assists in grant writing and reporting to secure additional funding for program.

Selects new curriculum for specialized courses; monitors workplace specific curriculum created from job analysis.

Meets with plant managers and human resource personnel to help develop and monitor program; helps develop internal marketing flyer for new business sites.

Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.

Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes word processing, spreadsheet, or other software programs.

Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Sets up appointments for ABE/Hi-SET assessment testing.  Provides information to prospective students concerning classes

Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.

Performs other related duties as required.
Typical Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, or closely related field; supplemented by one (1) year previous experience and/or training involving marketing, administration, education, and specialized training; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
