On Tuesday December 4th over 150 people gathered in Mebane at the Arts & Community Center for a special Community Council meeting.

Each year local nonprofits nominate deserving volunteers to be recognized for their service in Alamance County.  This year the following people were nominated:

Aarron Barr (winner)
Best Buddies of Elon University (winner)
CrossRoads Crisis Response Volunteers (winner)
Dorothy Spence (winner)
Dr. Don Chaplin
Jill Plunkett
John Stubblefield
Lonnie Graves
Making Visions
Morrow Town Task Force (winner)
Pat Shoffner
Paul Bogdan
Women for Growth

LabCorp has graciously agreed to make a $1,000 gift to the charity of choice for each of our five volunteer award winners. In addition, courtesy of the Times-News Celebrate Community program, a nominee will be featured in the Times-News each week through February. This public recognition in the Times-News will serve to highlight the volunteer efforts and commitment, and accomplishments.  Finally, each county in North Carolina is allowed to submit one name for the Governor’s Medallion Awards.  Twenty winners are then selected from across the state and are recognized each spring.  Alamance County has had a winner for eight of the last thirteen years.  This year our nominee will be Best Buddies of Elon University.

At this special Community Council meeting students visited from the Human Services Department at Elon University to present the semester long research that they conducted with local nonprofits.

And organizations showcased their holiday fundraisers!

Community Council is a signature program of United Way of Alamance County and has been serving local nonprofits since 1939.
