Community Partner Spotlight: Centro La Comunidad
Centro La Comunidad was established in 1988 and is a branch of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh. There are locations all over the state with different services. In Burlington, Centro La Comunidad offers immigration services, familial support, and disaster preparation and recovery. All staff and volunteers are bilingual in English and Spanish. They are working alongside other agencies in the county to identify gaps in services for the underserved populations in Alamance, specifically our Spanish-speaking residents.
We were able to visit Centro La Comunidad and learn more about each of these three programs. Roughly 50-60 different countries are represented in their immigration services. It is important to note that the staff are not legal representation but rather aid in submitting necessary legal documents or filling out necessary forms. Staff also assist in clients obtaining Faith ID’s if they are not able to get a government issued ID. Faith ID’s are a partnership between Burlington Police Department and community organizations.
Centro La Comunidad also offers familial support in various capacities. They function as a referral system and get people connected to the right services whether that be healthcare, stable housing, job assistance, etc. Staff conduct a needs assessment on the individual or family and go from there. They also offer disaster preparation and recovery and are a part of the local Disaster Response Team. Aid comes in the form of volunteer recruitment, food distribution, interpretation, family reunification, and any other needs in the community.
This organization is a subset of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Burlington and also has access to the food pantry associated with the church. If families are in need, staff have access to the pantry (they share a building) and can give food when needed. Centro La Comunidad is doing wonderful things in our county and deserve to be highlighted for the services they provide!
