Community Partner Spotlight: Burlington Development Corporation

Burlington Development Corporation is a subset of Burlington Housing Authority (BHA) and was created in 1982. The goal of the non-profit is to provide supportive services for their residents and in-turn promote self-sufficiency. Currently, BHA has 7 communities and 468 apartments throughout Burlington. BHA is working to change the culture of public housing and the stigma that may come along with that. This resident-driven organization empowers individuals to be successful in everything they do.

There are a wide array of services offered to BHA residents. BHA has a community watch to encourage individuals and families to get to know their neighbors and work together to protect their property. A Community Day is held every year for residents to socialize with one another in a fun environment with games and food. Residents also gather monthly for the Local Resident Council Meetings to identify needs in each of the communities and plan for future events/programs.

As well, there are youth-specific programs run by the Burlington Development Corporation. Programs include after-school programs, pre-kindergarten readiness and summer programs. We are proud to partner with their Pre-Kinders program. Children ages 3-5 that are residents of BHA can participate to strengthen their math, reading, and social skills. Children can expect activities like story time, recreation, and guided instruction. This program serves around 40 kids each year. The ultimate goal of the program is to break the cycle of poverty by setting the stage for life-long academic success. We know the connection between health, financial stability and education and hope for every child to be prepared to enter school!
