A New StoryWalk Will Call Mebane Home

The StoryWalk® Project

The StoryWalk Project was developed by Anne Ferguson in Montpelier, Vermont and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library to encourage reading while enjoying physical activity. In spring 2017, the Education Division of Community Council, sponsored by United Way of Alamance County, began discussing StoryWalk after hearing interest from several partners and stakeholders. A committee was formed to explore the possibilities of implementing the project and after a series of meetings; the walking track at North Park (in Burlington) was chosen to be the first location for a StoryWalk; this site was sponsored by a student philanthropy grant at Elon University and the Citrone Family. The Outdoor Learning Environment of Alamance Partnership for Children (in the Historic Glencoe Village) was selected for the second location; this site was co-sponsored by BB&T and the Alamance Foundation.  Beth Schmidt Park (in Elon), sponsored by Impact Alamance, was chosen as our third location. The Graham Middle School Walking Track, sponsored by Carolina Panthers Hometown Huddle is host to our fourth location. We are thrilled to be opening our fifth location at the Mebane Arts & Community Center on June 11, 2019. Mebane Woman’s Club and Samet Corporation are the co-sponsors for this new site.

The StoryWalk initiative combines physical activity and reading, a fun way for adults to engage with children. Through serve and return interactions, adults play a critical role in the brain development of young children; social communication is the most important kind of stimulation needed for healthy development and illustrates what serving and returning is all about.

Throughout the year the book will be changed with help from Alamance County Public Libraries. The StoryWalk committee members are very excited to continue this project in order to promote a culture of reading and healthy living in Alamance County.
