United Way wants to be a lead agent for change in Alamance County. Our goal is to decrease the number of people who live below the poverty level, keep our kids in school, decrease the number of residents living on the streets and increase the number of seniors living independently. One person or agency cannot do this alone. It takes everyone in the community working together to create a brighter future. Please join us in our efforts to Give. Advocate. Volunteer. Live United.   Â
Â
Volunteer-DrivenÂ
We are proud to say, all funding decisions are made by volunteers, not by paid staff members. These volunteers spend approximately eight weeks reviewing grants submitted by agencies to United Way and hearing presentations given by agency directors.  After considering each agency's request, the committees choose how to allocate funds to agencies. In 2009, United Way was only able to fund 53% of requests.        Â
Funding is targeted to four issue areas: Family, Youth, Elderly, and Basic Needs. Agencies who receive funding must abide by strict guidelines set by United Way to assure monies they receive are being used efficiently and effectively. Agencies must furnish United Way with an annual audited financial statement. Â
Â
Our PartnersÂ
United Way has two classes of partners who receive funding – community partners and affiliate partners.Â
Â
Community Partner is any agency who receives funding through the allocations process. Community partners must adhere to all reporting requirement and sign a partner agreement. Community partners are not subject to processing fees for funds that are donor designated.   Â
Affiliate Partners are 501(C)3 agencies who apply for funding but receive designations only. Affiliate partners are not subject to outcome reporting or other reporting requirements. Donor designations for affiliates are subject to the fundraising overhead percentage only. Affiliate partners must meet a priority need.
Unaffiliated Agencies are agencies that receive designations through the United Way and are subject to the full overhead percentage for management and general and fundraising. Designation amounts for unaffiliated agencies are paid as received on a quarterly basis.      Â
